Upendra Kandel Foundation

The Upendra Kandel Foundation is deeply rooted in the life and legacy of Upendra Kandel, a figure whose journey reflects the resilience, adaptability, and commitment to service that define the Nepali spirit.
Born a year after the 1934 Nepal-Bihar earthquake, Upendra Kandel was raised in a nation grappling with the aftermath of devastation and striving to rebuild itself. His upbringing was steeped in resilience and a deep-rooted sense of community.
Educated in the traditional “Gurukul” system, an ancient approach to education advocated by East-Asian philosophy, Mr Kandel imbibed values that went beyond mere academics, emphasizing holistic development and service to others. The system sought to instil in its students a well-rounded framework to approach life.

After graduating from Dehradun University in 1956 with a degree in Sanskrit, Upendra embarked on a journey marked by a steadfast commitment to education, public service, and community empowerment. His career as a head teacher in Baglung laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication to uplifting Nepali communities.
In 1963, Mr Kandel entered the realm of governance, becoming the mayor of Panchayat, Baglung. His administration reflected his unwavering resolve to advocate for the rights and wellbeing of his fellow citizens. Transitioning to the business sector in Chitwan, Upendra Kandel demonstrated his versatility and entrepreneurial spirit, establishing and managing various enterprises, including local brick and oil factories.

Despite his success in business, Mr Kandel's passion for public service never waned. He re-entered the political arena in 1967, striving to expand democratic rights for Nepalese citizens. In due course, he was appointed as a ministerial advisor to the executive committee of the democratic party, the primary opposition to Nepal’s monarchical government at the time. Upendra played a pivotal role in advocating for political reform and societal progress, underscoring his commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
In 1992, Mr Kandel chose to prioritize his family, returning to Chitwan to ensure his children were raised with the same values that guided his own life. Upendra Kandel spent the next decade striking a balance between his various business ventures and his busy family schedule, allowing him and his wife to devote themselves to their children without compromising his devotion to serve his community through a local wholesale food trade.
